Designing a seamless UX/UI for a personal safety app, enhancing accessibility, usability, and confidence for all users.

**Year:** 2022

**Client:** Callie by Safepoint

**Industry:** Personal Safety

**What We Delivered:** UI, UX, App, Motion

## Introduction

In response to increasing demand for personal safety tools, particularly from women in high-risk environments, Safepoint expanded beyond workplace solutions to launch Callie, a consumer-focused personal safety device and app.

Working closely with experts in jewellery design, wearable technology, and software, they set out to create a product that looked discreet, felt reassuring, and worked seamlessly. To bring the digital side of this experience to life, they partnered with Layers Studio to design a mobile app that not only looked great but functioned effortlessly in the moments users need it most.

## Challenge

The key challenge was designing a mobile experience that could match the urgency and emotional sensitivity of personal safety.
The app needed to pair flawlessly with the Callie device while staying simple, clear, and fast to use under pressure. We also needed to consider a broad user base, from digital natives to those less familiar with mobile apps, meaning accessibility and intuitive design were non-negotiable.

Our task:
Design a mobile app UX/UI that works hand-in-hand with the Callie wearable
Prioritise accessibility and usability without sacrificing functionality
Reinforce trust, calm, and control through thoughtful interaction design and visual language

## User Experience (UX)

The UX process commenced with an extensive stakeholder discussion involving Safepoint's team to align our collective understanding of the project's objectives, target audience, and core values. Gathering insights from diverse perspectives laid the foundation for our user-centric design approach. While we did not conduct additional external research, we had access to Safepoint's comprehensive internal research. This provided deep insights into the user's needs and preferences, allowing us to better understand our target demographic.

Once the project's goals were clear, the next step involved crafting user stories to empathise with end-users and identify their needs and pain points. These stories played a crucial role in defining the features and functionalities required to create a seamless safety experience.

Understanding the user's journey was of paramount importance in delivering an intuitive and efficient app. By meticulously mapping the user's experience, from initial onboarding to utilising the safety features, we gained valuable insights into key touchpoints and areas for improvement.

## User Interface (UI)

A design review session with stakeholders enabled us to refine our approach based on their feedback and expertise. This ensured that our proposed UX/UI strategy was aligned with Safepoint's values and mission.

A critical part of the app consisted of the onboarding experience, where simplicity and clarity were prioritised. A well-structured onboarding flow guided users through setting up profiles and personal preferences. Additionally, we streamlined the process of sending alerts in emergencies, providing clear and concise steps to ensure rapid responses. We also implemented a status feature, offering real-time updates on users' safety to instil peace of mind.

Establishing a cohesive visual identity was crucial to evoke trust and confidence among users. We created a comprehensive style guide encompassing typography, colours, iconography, and imagery that reflected Safepoint's Callie brand essence. This style guide served as a reference for consistency across all app screens and interactions and to visualise the app's structure and flow, we developed wireframes that outlined core elements and interactions.

To bring the app to life, we transformed the wireframes into interactive prototypes. This prototyping phase enabled us to validate our design decisions and gain a better understanding of how users would interact with the safety features. Additionally, to enhance the user experience, we carefully incorporated subtle animations to provide visual feedback and guide users seamlessly through their actions, adding a touch of delight and reassurance to the app's functionality.

## Result

We delivered a clean, accessible, and emotionally intelligent UX/UI for the Callie app, built around what matters most to users: speed, simplicity, and confidence.
From the first tap, users are guided through a frictionless experience that enables quick responses in stressful situations. Whether triggering an alert, checking device status, or updating contacts, every touchpoint is designed to reassure and empower.

Key results:

- Streamlined emergency alert flow for fast action when it matters

- Real-time status updates to keep users informed and connected

- Inclusive interface design to support accessibility across all user types

- Consistent, calming visual identity to reinforce Safepoint’s brand of trust and protection

By putting user needs and emotional context at the heart of our design process, the app now plays a key role in helping Safepoint fulfil its mission: giving people the freedom to live, travel, and work with confidence.

## Why It Matters

Personal safety shouldn’t be complex, and for many users, it’s not just about technology, but how it makes them feel. This project shows how great design can translate critical functionality into something calming, empowering, and easy to use.
With Callie, Safepoint now offers more than a product, they provide peace of mind. And we’re proud to have played a part in making that possible through thoughtful, human-centred digital design.
